ephemera and etcetera
My work is a gathering of fetishes—images, paint, text, nails, tape, LPs, CDs—ephemera—forming talismanic objects. These works, these objects, employ elements that have, perhaps, lost their memories, that suffer a kind of inanimate amnesia. Through re-presentation, juxtaposition, and/or slight manipulation I am attempting to enact a remembering; a remembering that becomes an embodiment; an embodiment that gives a shape to feeling (or vice versa); that makes manifest a sense of loss, of mourning. For I sense that all art-making is, ultimately, a kind of lamentation. Irreverent and reverent, oracular, existing in and travelling through time, these works are informed by music and musicians, poems, and poets. They are dedications and elegies...for memory, for myth, for a continuously shuffling, sometimes ambling, mostly stumbling, history that is mine, that is ours…is elusive, and…etcetera.
