A Vertical Life
We live with a massive ocean of thoughts, knowledge, feelings and things.
We gather and make piles upon piles, stacking these things, perhaps in an
effort to know ourselves. From them we imagine we are enriched, gaining
and defining our sense of identity. So much comes and goes, passing through
like speeding cars on a highway. We are witnesses, always watching, sometimes
looking, but rarely seeing.
The things that we are actually able to see are the things we grasp as truth.
Sometimes those things collect us: Jaguar XKE, diamond ring, Gucci slippers,
words, power ties, Nobel peace prizes, presidential nomination, bubble gum
wrappers, toenails, belly button lint…
A Vertical Life refers to my view of our current relationship with
things and how we put them together. We spend a good part of our lives being
upright, standing, walking and sitting. And I see that we store, organize,
and categorize, our collections in this way, vertically within our personal
and public spaces. In arranging and re-arranging a representative collection
of some of our daily materials, I hope to provide a fresh perspective and
revitalize our understanding and enjoyment of common things and inspire
a closer look at all that surrounds us.
Pavlov’s Ladder looks at the programming demanded by the
business world, a hierarchy of uniforms, rules, and regulations…conditions
for assent up the ladder of success to riches and fame.
A new rendition of Road Hazards includes nails and other sharp
objects gathered from the streets of the world arranged in a vertical column.
This personal collection was begun 24 years ago and continues today.
