Kathy A. Halamka: "Grounded," mixed media, 24" x 16", 2006.
Combining her photographs and drawings with the vivid Taoist colors of
ancient Korean decorative patterns and contemporary Korean manga, Halamka
fabricates a moment where the past and my present unify with some idealized
future. Her speculations are constructed of layered and embedded charcoal,
conte pastel, cyanotypes, and photocopy transfers on birch plywood. For
her subject matter, Halamka regularly reinvents unknown ancestors and imagines
far-off descendants. She wonders, "Am I also then transforming their
dreams and aspirations? Idealized somewhere … over some other rainbow.

Debra Giller: "Blackeyed Poppies, ceramics, 30" x 15" x 15", 2006. Photo: Steve Gyurina.
For her ceramic sculpture, Giller combines industrial and organic shapes
that evoke playful associations with the environment. The contrast of glazes—
from soft and fleshy to metallic—furthers this tension between hyper-technical
and biological. "Twilight Rhythms" suggests an intermediate state
that is not clearly defined: the mind can wander and fantasies can emerge.
