Jill Weber

New Paintings

"New Paintings"

An evolution of her earlier skylight paintings, Weber continues to be interested in finding and showing the essential components of architectural space and details using minimal means. Photographs or found newspaper images provide the basic sources.

By building a landscape of ambiguity using various points of view and placement, she poses a challenge to viewers to explore a spatial realm.

Laura Rollins

Velveetaland

Laura Rollins: "Velveetaland"

Try as I may," says Rollins, "I am repeatedly drawn to the delicious juxtaposition of high and low art." Influenced by a variety of avant-garde artists, she combines notions of surface (Andy Warhol, Christo) with readymades (ManRay, Jeff Koons) and food substances utilized as artistic media (Josef Beuys, Sandy Skoglund, Janine Antoni).

Rollins’ use of actual Velveeta as an art-making medium along with figurative "cultural cheese" plays with and acknowledges society’s investment in a number of ideas—many of them related to preciousness and archivalness.

What (if anything) lies beneath both literal and figurative layers?
