Photographs, mixed media, installation
by Youth Art in Action, Boston
and the AjA Project and DCP, Bogotá, Colombia

On view at Bromfield Gallery from July 5 - 22 is "Active Art: Photographs, mixed media, installation by Youth Art in Action, Boston and The AjA Project and DCP, Bogotá, Colombia." The reception is Friday, July 7, from 6-8 pm. Gallery hours are Tues–Sat, 12-6.

The mission of The AjA (an acronym in Spanish for supporting self-sufficiency) Project and DCP (Disparando Cámaras para la Paz/Shooting Cameras for Peace), from Bogotá, Colombia, is to empower refugee and underprivileged youth through arts education programs. The youth learn vocational, technical, and photographic skills. Based in San Diego, The AjA Project runs the "Journey" program for resettled refugee youth in San Diego County. DCP was born as an initiative of The AjA Project and is now an independent Colombian nonprofit working with internally displaced youth living near Bogotá.

Youth Art in Action (YAIA) is an arts activism program in which urban youth develop leadership and collaboration skills to help them succeed in school and in life. YAIA is a place where youth can investigate issues in their communities, meet youth from other neighborhoods, and create public art as a catalyst for change.

This exhibition is guest-curated by Boston artists Heidi M. Marston and Steve Aishman.

Chris Nau: Knife and Acid

Chris Nau’s abstract woodblock prints are created via a two-color process in which the darker color is printed first, followed by the lighter color—creating a third unpredictable color/element in the print. "I develop my work by colliding different systems," says Nau, "discovering new images that result from those collisions." The prints on view are an extension of his series of paintings and drawings he began in 2004 based on Naval Camouflage or Dazzle Paintings.

The Project Space is a collaboration between the Bromfield Gallery and the Artists Foundation. Nau's Bromfield show is in conjunction with a solo show of his drawings at the Drawing Project at the Bernard Toale Gallery (July 4-28), and a solo show of his "Dazzle" paintings at the Artists Foundation (July 15- August 15).
